Glass Repair – How to Repair a Cracked Window

Cracked glass is not only unsightly but also dangerous and can allow drafts, water, or snow into a home or business. If you have a window pane that is cracked, there are several options available to help repair the crack so it’s safe and functional again.

The easiest solution is to simply cover the crack with a piece of tape. This will accomplish two things: It will stabilize the crack, which can slow or even prevent it from spreading further. It will also help seal the area, which can limit how much cold or hot air is transferred into the home or business.

For a more permanent solution, epoxy or super glue can be used to bond the broken glass together. Before applying the adhesive, the surface of the damaged glass should be cleaned thoroughly. This is to make sure the adhesive sticks and bonds with the glass. It’s a good idea to use a razor blade or a clean rag with acetone to remove any stubborn dirt and debris that may be on the glass.

Once the area is clean, it’s a good idea to test out the adhesive by placing some on your finger and gently pressing it against the glass. If it holds and you don’t feel any loose pieces, then you can proceed with the repair. It’s also a good idea to tape the edges of the crack to secure it in place while the epoxy sets.

A step up from tape is glass repair film, which can be found in do-it-yourself glass repair kits. This material can be cut to the size of the damaged window and then applied over it. It’s more resilient than tape and will provide a bit more protection, but it is still not as strong as a full replacement.

When applying the repair material, it’s a good idea to follow the instructions that come with it. Most of the time, it will be a mixture of resin and hardener that can be mixed up and applied to the cracked area with a putty knife. Once the epoxy is applied, it should be allowed to set for a few hours or overnight.

After the epoxy has cured, you can remove the plastic covering or tape and inspect the repaired window. If there are any loose or unapplied areas of the patch, it’s a good idea to redo the repair. Likewise, if you notice any signs of the crack spreading or weakening, it’s best to have the problem inspected and fixed by a professional as soon as possible to avoid further problems with your glass.
