If someone broke your favourite window, or a family member knocked over the photo frame with a shattered piece of glass, don’t worry, it can be fixed quite easily. The first step is to assess the damage and make sure you have the right dimensions. There is little leeway with glass, so getting the measurements right is crucial.

Next, clean the glass surface with a suitable glass cleaner or rubbing alcohol, and remove any residue or contaminants. This includes adhesive residue and fingerprints. Once clean, thoroughly inspect the glass surface for imperfections and blemishes. Any imperfections should be addressed before proceeding with the cutting process, as this can cause breakage during the squeezing/breaking of the glass.

Once the glass has been cleaned and inspected, place it onto a flat, cushioned work surface. This is important as the hard surfaces of tile or concrete are prone to scratching the glass during the cutting process. A padded surface made of felt or similar is best.

Using the markings on the sheet of glass, mark on the reverse side where you would like to cut. For straight cuts this is usually sufficient, but if you are attempting a curved cut, a template is needed. Once marked, secure the sheet of glass to a flat work surface with masking tape. Ensure the tape is not covering any areas where you will be making the cuts, as this could interfere with the accuracy of your work.

Place the cutter on top of the marked glass, and apply a moderate amount of pressure to begin the cutting process. Do not stop the cutting motion until you have reached the end of the line, and remember to keep a uniform level of pressure. If you notice that the wheel is gliding off of the edge, this is a sign that you are applying too much pressure.

When the cut has been scored, carefully break the glass along the lines of the cut. This can be done manually, but is more reliable with suitable glass breaking pliers. Ensure the pliers are fitted with a pad, to avoid the possibility of damaging the glass during the break.

The resulting glass can now be used for your desired project. You may wish to sand the edges of the glass once it has been cut, or use a glass cleaner spray to remove any remaining splinters from the break point. You can also choose to buff the edges of the glass with sandpaper to produce a smooth, even finish.
