Glass Repair Vs Replacement

Whether your glass is damaged by an accident or a simple road hazard, it’s important to have your windshield repaired as soon as possible. The winter is especially dangerous for glass because of the added debris on the roads due to snow and rock salt. This added debris can cause small chips to become cracks that could eventually block your view while you drive around Indianapolis, Fishers, and Bloomington. While you may be tempted to drive with a cracked window or windshield, it’s important to know the difference between glass repair and replacement so that you can make the best decision for your situation.

Window replacement is an expensive project, so it’s important to get the right measurements before purchasing your new windows. It’s important to measure your window sills and head window jambs on the left, center, and right sides. This will give you the rough opening sizes for your replacement window. To be more accurate, you can also measure diagonally on each side of the window. This will help ensure that your new window is a perfect fit.

Once you’ve taken your horizontal and vertical measurements, subtract 1/8 inch from each side to ensure that the new window pane is a precise fit. Then, write down the width and height measurements for your replacement window so that you can purchase the correct glass. It’s also important to consider whether you want a double-pane or single-pane window. Double-pane windows are more energy efficient and have a greater lifespan than single-pane windows.

You can bring your measurements to your local hardware or home improvement store and they will be able to help you find the appropriate glass for your window. Most stores sell both single- and double-pane replacement window glass, but you will need to bring the measurements for your specific window to be sure that the new window will be a perfect fit.

Before you begin removing the window frame, take the time to protect yourself from broken glass and other shattered pieces by using eye protection and gloves. Also, use tape to bind any loose areas of glass and seal it to prevent any further damage. You can then remove the window sash, which is the moveable portion of the window. Once the sash is removed, you can start removing the window frame.

While it’s a good idea to replace your old windows before they break, many homeowners don’t realize that there are other options for upgrading their homes. The decision to replace or upgrade your windows should always be weighed in terms of cost-benefit and energy efficiency. In some cases, replacing your home windows with a more energy-efficient option will save you money over the long run, and in other cases it will not.
