You live with glass all the time – in windows and doors, on tables and surfaces, on the front of your stove and microwave, in picture frames. It would take a lot to break any of these panes of glass, but a bad storm, a stray ball or pebble from the mower, or even just rough-housing in the family can leave you with broken glass you need to fix. It may seem daunting, but with a little planning and precautionary steps, it is possible to successfully repair cracked and scratched glass without the need for professional help.

Depending on the severity of your glass damage, you can try a few different fixes to make your damaged glass look good as new. For example, a simple strip of masking tape can be enough to hold superficial cracks in place, such as those caused by low temperatures that cause glass to expand and contract. For deeper cracks, such as those caused by flying objects, you’ll want to double up the tape and extend it a few inches beyond the crack on both sides.

Another option is to use a heavy-duty adhesive, such as super glue, to hold the glass in place. This is a quick fix and requires minimal tools, but you’ll need to be careful not to drip any of the adhesive onto the frame surrounding the glass. If the frame is made of wood, you’ll need to seal any bare wood using linseed oil or clear wood sealer.

Once you have the appropriate adhesive on hand, mix it according to the instructions on the package. Generally, you’ll need to use equal parts of resin and hardener. Be careful not to over-mix, as the epoxy will thicken quickly and need to be used immediately. For best results, mix the epoxy for at least 20 seconds. Once you’ve mixed the adhesive, apply it to the glass cracks with a putty knife. Work it into the cracks and around the edges of the glass, then let it cure for at least 5 minutes before using.

If you’re repairing a car windshield, be sure to follow your manufacturer’s recommendations for reinstalling it. Windshields that are cracked or chipped can reduce your visibility, which is a serious safety risk while driving. Fortunately, most auto glass repairs can be done at home using the same adhesives you’ll find in your local hardware store.

Whether you’re trying to fix a cracked window, a windshield or a table top, it’s important to address the problem right away before it gets worse. If you wait to repair damaged glass, it may get worse or even shatter into pieces that you can’t use.
